Tales from the Borderlands Episode 3: Catch a Ride review

Telltale Games has delighted millions of fans over the last few years with some pretty impressive adventure experiences based on plenty of existing properties. While its The Walking Dead seasons have garnered the studio a cult following, the other franchises, like The Wolf Among Us, have also offered solid experiences.

Now, Telltale is finally back with another episode in its Tales from the Borderlands series, in the form of chapter 3: Catch a Ride. The last episode was a pretty intense one that ended on a major choice and foreshadowed some pretty big events for the latest adventure.

Does Catch a Ride manage to deliver on its promises or should we take a ride out of the Borderlands? Let's find out.

Story

Telltale Games currently has two series underway, starting with the more prestigious Game of Thrones one, based on the hit book and HBO TV show property, and Tales from the Borderlands. However, it's become clear to players of both series that the Borderlands experience is much more fun.

Episode 3 of Tales from the Borderlands continues the solid run of the adventure series and delivers a very compelling story that not only focuses on the two main protagonists, Rhys and Fiona, but also on their friends as well as several Vault Hunters that starred in the actual Borderlands games.

Catch a Ride can be a pretty different experience depending on who you trusted at the end of episode 2. I will spoil that choice, but I won't make any reference towards what really happens in the latest chapter. Those who sided with Fiona as well as those who decided to trust Handsome Jack's hologram will go on quite a few new adventures, while traveling with Gortys, a new robot that seems to be the key to finding a mysterious Vault on the planet of Pandora.

The different adventures are filled with plenty of hilarious moments, lots of sequences where the fourth wall is broken, and concludes with a pretty intense showdown that serves to remind players that the world of Pandora isn't always a place where fairness and the good guys win.

A lot of character building happens for both Rhys and Fiona, not to mention some great moments with Vaughn, Sasha, and Loader Bot. Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel's Athena also makes a showing, alongside a few other surprise Vault Hunters.

The new villain, the Queenpin, is also pretty menacing and shows that, while players in previous titles have taken down plenty of bad people, there are always many others willing to take their spots. What's more, it also adds to the fact that cash rules everything in Pandora and that anyone can be tempted into doing things they may or may not want by the right incentive.

Gameplay

In terms of gameplay, Tales from the Borderlands has quite a few action sequences thanks to the many dramatic situations that happen during the latest episode. There are a few interesting moments where you can explore an environment, but also a variety of intense quick-time events. Almost all work quite well in highlighting the tension but others feel a bit too long for their own sake. There are quite a few great choices that serve to show just how much Fiona develops as a character.

The dialog options are also quite solid, offering the potential for plenty of back-and-forth discussions, not to mention pretty hilarious exchanges between the main characters. There are also plenty of situations where exploring the environment before engaging in conversations can offer new options, and there are also some hilarious moments between Loader Bot and Gortys, the innocent robot that guides the main characters on their adventure.

The choices offered to players are interesting overall and some provide a few surprises. While trusting one person or the other at the end of the last episode has a big impact on the beginning of Catch a Ride, things eventually get on a single track towards the end. This isn't a bad thing, as the final moments are very intense for both Rhys and Fiona, not to mention the many other characters involved.

Visuals and Sound

Tales from the Borderlands continues to sport some solid graphics that perfectly recreate the trademark cel-shaded style used by the main Borderlands titles. While once again the facial gestures aren't exactly the most subtle and don't transition all that well, things are still good.

The soundtrack is also impressive, managing to once again complement the action on the screen. The voice acting, of course, is top notch, as Rhys, Fiona, and the other supporting cast offer some solid performances.

The Good

  • Intense story
  • Plenty of hilarious moments
  • Lots of character development
  • Solid voice acting

The Bad

  • Some quick-time events don't feel right
  • Facial animations are a bit stiff

Conclusion

Tales from the Borderlands Episode 3: Catch a Ride manages to continue the great showing of the adventure series made by Telltale. It's fun, intense, and manages to really develop not only its original characters but also some of the stablished Vault Hunters from previous games.
