Bacula comes with five distinct services: Console, Storage, Director, Monitor and File, each of them being responsible for a specific task.
The Console component is available in three kinds of interfaces: QT-based, text-based shell and a wxWidgets graphic interface. All of them enable you to with the Director service, but the wxWidgets GUI comes with an interactive file restore function which can speed up the overall process.
You can perform data recovery on tapes, physical drives or any other kind of media by using the Bacula Storage service, which runs as a background daemon and handles all the common file operations used in the recovery process.
The Bacula Director component is used to supervise all the recovery, verification and backup operations that take place on the network. You can also use it to schedule backups and recoveries, as well as for complex archive operations.
As the name implies, the Monitor service enables you to keep an eye on the current status of the other Bacula daemons and components, including the Storage and Director activity. The Monitor runs in the system tray and it does not interfere with your other windows.
The Bacula File service is the actual client program, which has to be installed on the machine on which the backup is performed. This component differs depending on the operating system on which the software is installed and it runs as a deamon on the target machine.
