Microsoft rolls out patch to support MKV copying

Windows Phone 8.1 Update 2 comes with native support for MKV files, and so does the PC version of Windows 10, so Microsoft has started tweaking previous versions of Windows and work with this popular video format.

An update that was released by Microsoft today (and marked as optional in Windows Update) comes to add support for copying MKV files from Windows Explorer directly on your Windows Phone, thus making it easier to transfer movies that can be then watched on your handset.

Until now, MKV support was missing, and despite the fact that some users claim they were actually able to copy videos with this format via File explorer on their phones, others were not, so Microsoft is now trying to make this a native feature of Windows.

The update is now being shipped to Windows computers in the form of KB3013531, so in case you're not willing to install all optional updates, but get this functionality on your Windows PC, this is the code you need to look for.

The patch applies to Windows 7 and newer, including Windows 8.1, Windows RT 8.1, Windows 8, Windows RT, Windows Server 2008 R2 and windows Server 2012 R2.

Additionally, if you want to download KB3013531 manually, you can find it in Microsoft's Download Center, but make sure you get the right version for your Windows.
