Microsoft could get closer to Apple in the mobile market

Windows Phone continues to be the third mobile OS in the world, but that could change soon if what Gartner research director Ranjit Atwal predicts proves to be true.

In an interview with ITPro, Atwal explains that Windows Phone is well positioned to grow really fast in the coming years, and despite being behind Android and iOS in the global charts, it's very likely to get closer to the latter very fast.

“We expect Windows to grow faster than iOS, as the PC market stabilises and the challenge for the next iPhone to find significant growth becomes greater, narrowing the gap between the two operating systems," Atwal was quoted as saying.

Of course, this means that Microsoft would need to continue investments in Windows Phone, and as things seem to develop right now, Redmond is fully prepared to do that in the long term.

This year, for instance, Microsoft is expected to introduce Windows Phone 10, a new version of the mobile operating system that would add new features and visual tweaks to the current build. At the same time, the company is also working on new devices, some of which could see daylight in the coming months, to make more affordable phones available to users worldwide and to expand its Lumia series.

Flagships are also part of Microsoft's plans, but according to people close to the matter, no such models will arrive in the coming months. New flagships will only debut in the fall of 2015, after the introduction of Windows Phone 10, they claim.
