The number of apps available to users keeps growing

Back in October 2012, when Microsoft officially introduced the new Windows 8 modern operating system, it did so with only 5,000 apps in the store, and since then, the company has continuously tried to convince developers to bring their software in the Metro UI of its platform.

Things have evolved at a rather slow pace, and now that we’re more than two years away from the public launch of Windows 8, the operating system has finally reached a new critical milestone: 190,000 apps in the Windows Store.

Many of these are actually games and few are universal apps that run on both tablets and smartphones, but there’s no doubt that each could come in handy to some users out there.

The biggest problem in Microsoft’s case is the amount of spam that still seems to exist in the Windows Store, despite the company’s promise to put the focus on quality rather than on quantity.

In mid-2014, after receiving tons of reports pointing to fake and spam apps, Microsoft finally started cleaning the store and removed a plethora of entries that did nothing more than to try and trick people into paying a few bucks for virtually nothing.

At this point, the number of spam apps has dropped a little bit, but this doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s all just milk and honey in the store. In fact, there still are a few fake items here and there, but users should be safe if they check twice before paying for an app promising to offer them something that seems too good to be true.
