GNU/Linux Utopia is an open source, free and independent distribution of Linux derived from Slackware and built around the latest stable version of the Enlightenment graphical desktop environment. It has been designed especially for Spanish-speaking users.
The Utopia distribution is available for download as an installable-only ISO image that contains software packages optimized for both 32-bit and 64-bit instruction set architectures. It can be written to either a USB flash drive or DVD discs, which can be later used to boot the OS from the BIOS of your computer.
Being based on Slackware Linux, the Utopia distribution features a minimal boot prompt designed mostly for advanced users who want to pass extra parameters to the kernel. Regular users should just press the Enter key to start the text-mode installer and deploy the operating system on your personal computer.
Like many other Slackware derivatives, GNU/Linux Utopia must be installed on your machine along with an existing OS, on a separate disk drive or by replacing your primary operating system. The installation requires basic knowledge about how to install a Slackware Linux distro. Basically, you’ll have to choose a keyboard layout, partition the disk drive and create a bootable partition that is bigger than 10 GB, format it and wait for the packages to be installed.
GNU/Linux Utopia is one of the first operating systems to adopt the Enlightenment 0.19 desktop environment/window manager, which looks gorgeous. It comprises of a panel located on the bottom part of the screen, designed to allow users to interact with running programs, launch apps, as well as to access various essential system functions.
The distro includes a vast amount of applications, some of them being widely used by the Open Source community, such as the Mozilla Firefox web browser, Mozilla Thunderbird e-mail and news client, Deluge torrent downloader, LibreOffice office suite, Steam for Linux client and VLC Media Player.
It comes with the Audacious music player, FileZilla file transfer client, SMPlayer video player, Pidgin multi-protocol instant messenger, MeTV TV viewer, MLDonkey P2P client, Wicd network manager, as well as Wine, so you can install apps and games designed for the Microsoft Windows operating system.
