Redmine is an open source, web-based, cross-database, freely distributed and platform-independent project management application written with the powerful Ruby on Rails framework.
Key features include support for multiple projects, flexible role-based access control, flexible issue tracking system, gantt calendar & chart, files, documents and news management, email and feed notifications, per project wiki, support for multiple languages, as well as per project forums.
Among other features, we can mention simple time tracking functionality, custom fields for issues, users and projects, SCM integration (SVN, Mercurial, Darcs and CVS), multiple LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol) authentication support, user self-registration support, multi-language support, and support for multiple databases (MySQL, PostgreSQL and SQLite).
Redmine allows you to manage multiple projects from a single instance, where each registered user has a different role for each of your projects, and where projects can be declared private or public. Modules are also supported and can be easily enabled or disabled at project level.
You can use Redmine to manage parts of a project as subproject or a standalone project, you can define your own roles, issue types and statuses, as well as to set permissions for these. It is also possible to set up workflow transitions for each role or issue type.
You will be able to enter time and date at ticket or project level, generate simple reports that show the issue type, activity, category and time per user, and you can define your very own custom fields for projects, issues, time-entries, and users.
As mentioned, Redmine is a Ruby on Rails app, so you must install Ruby on your operating system, download the latest release of Redmin, save the archive on your PC and unpack it, then open a Terminal app, go to the location of the extracted archive file and run the ‘rake’ command to compile it. You can also install Redmine on any computer using the Bitnami Redmine Stack installers.
