After many months of silence, the guys over Scibuntu were more than happy to announce the release of the Beta build of their Scibuntu 0.4 open-source and free software for Ubuntu users.

Before anything else, we want to inform those of you who are not in the loop that Scibuntu is a single script that provides Ubuntu users with a graphical dialog from where they can install all sorts of scientific applications. It will transform your Ubuntu Linux distribution into an operating system for scientists and science students with a click of a mouse.

The latest version, Scibuntu 0.4.1 Beta is now available for download (see link at the end of the article), and as expected, it adds support for even more of those powerful, open-source, and free scientific apps out there (see here for the entire list of supported apps). Best of all, the entire application has been completely rewritten from scratch, which means that it supports the latest versions of Ubuntu and Linux technologies.

"Scibuntu 0.4-beta includes a graphical chooser where you can choose between lots of programs for different scientific areas. The new version adds lots of more programs than the former versions and is an almost complete rewrite of the code. With this version, we also welcome scientists and science student to join the Scibuntu community," reads the announcement on the project's website.

At the moment, Scibuntu lets you install tools for reading and writing scientific text, bioinformatics packages, math and statistics tools, chemistry apps, a reference manager, plotting and physics utilities, various command-line tools, as well as development packages.
