14 DAY TRIAL // The ownCloud devs have announced earlier that they are planning on making the upgrades for their powerful and open-source ownCloud Server more robust.
Last week, we reported on the next major release of ownCloud, version 9, which ownCloud CTO Frank Karlitschek promised on his Twitter account would be a cool one. Since then, many users have asked us if we know anything about the upcoming features of ownCloud 9.
Well, today we have some good news for system administrators who manage multiple ownCloud installations on their servers, as they will be able to upgrade those instances much faster and without too much hassle. Why? Because the entire upgrade process will be separated from the rest of the ownCloud installation.
"As part of our efforts, we’ve introduced changes which put more manual work on the shoulders of ownCloud system administrators. The downside was that these made the upgrade process more cumbersome. We’re aware of this and are working hard on creating a robust, yet simple upgrade process," say the ownCloud developers.
Moreover, the ownCloud team will redesign the steps for the upgrade app, which will go like this: check the system to see if it's healthy and output an overview of the upgrade process, back up the database and the data, upgrade the database schema, disable third-party apps, upgrade core apps, and re-enable and upgrade third-party apps.
At the moment of writing this article, they’ve managed to implement the first change, and thus separate the updater from the rest of ownCloud installation. From today onwards, they will concentrate all of their efforts on implementing the various steps explained above. A more in-depth article about the changes can be found here.
