Kodi 17 will be released later this year

In the last days of 2015, the Kodi developers were in search of a codename for the next major release of their free, open-source and cross-platform media center software, Kodi 17, which should enter development in early 2016.

A few days before Christmas 2015, they decided to choose a finalist from the multitude of community suggestions, and since we're covering the development of the Kodi media center here on Softpedia, we've decided to write a small blog article to inform our readers that Kodi 17 will be named "Krypton."

"Since the dawn of time, or at least since 2008 each released version has received a code name next to the version number. Giving each development iteration a code name in a certain category is kind of a tradition that is not only applicable for software but also for hardware," said Martijn Kaijser.

We have to admit that Krypton is a powerful name for Kodi, which means that the development team must add some astonishing features in the Kodi 17 release for it to live up to its moniker. And now that Kodi 16 "Jarvis" is almost out, with the last Beta build out the door on January 11, 2016, the Kodi devs will do just that.

As usual, we will cover the entire development cycle of Kodi 17, which will happen all year long, and as soon as we get our hands on some of its new features, we'll write here a more in-depth article. In the meantime, you can download the latest Kodi release right now from Softpedia.
