We reported a few days ago, on July 28, 2015, that Canonical released a kernel update for its long-term supported Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (Trusty Tahr) operating system, patching four kernel vulnerabilities.

Today, July 31, Canonical started seeding a new kernel update for the Ubuntu 14.04 LTS distribution, claming that three security issues have been patched in the Linux 3.13 kernel packages used in the acclaimed operating system.

All three vulnerabilities are flaws in Linux kernel's handling of nested NMIs (non-maskable interrupts), as discovered by Andy Lutomirski, but they are the same ones detailed by Canonical in the Ubuntu Security Notice from July 28.

However, it would appear that the version of the kernel for Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (Trusty Tahr) has been changed, from linux-image-3.13.0-59 (3.13.0-59.98) to linux-image-3.13.0-61 (3.13.0-61.100).

Therefore, we are urging all users of the Ubuntu 14.04 LTS operating system to update their systems as soon as possible, as the new kernel is available in the software repositories of the distribution.

To update, fire up the Software Updater utility, wait for it to load available updates, then apply them all. After a successful update process, reboot your computer for the new kernel version to become active.
