VideoLAN, the company that creates the powerful, multi-platform and highly acclaimed VLC Media Player software, just introduced a few minutes ago, February 27, the sixth maintenance release for the 2.1 branch of the software, while VLC 2.2 is still in development, and the forthcoming VLC 3.0 application is in early alpha stages.

VLC 2.1.6 is here as a quick fix release, replacing the existing VLC 2.1.5 version. This version fixes OSS (Open Sound System) stuttering issues, repairs a heap overflow in the decomp stream filter, fixes a buffer overflow in the updater component, and addresses an SRTP (Secure Real-time Transport Protocol) integer overflow in the application.

Additionally, VLC Media Player 2.1.6 repairs a potential crash that could occur when accessing zip archives, fixes a read overflow in the OGG demuxer, fixes a null-pointer dereference in the DMO (DirectX Media Object) decoder, and addresses a potential buffer overflow discovered in the schroedinger encoder.

Last but not least, a buffer overflow that occurred when parsing string boxes in the MP4 demuxer has been addressed in VLC 2.1.6. Furthermore, the Greek encoding and various translations have been updated on the Windows platform. Download VLC 2.2.0 right now from Softpedia (at the moment it is available only for GNU/Linux systems).

UPDATE: In the mean time, VideoLAN released VLC Media Player 2.2.0 that deprecates version 2.1.6 for which we've written this article. You can now download VLC 2.2.0 instead!
