On May 19, the Ubuntu Kernel Team had a meeting in order to plan the steps that are to be taken by them prior to the migration to the latest upstream Linux kernel packages for the upcoming Ubuntu 15.10 (Wily Werewolf) operating system.

As we reported earlier this month, the development cycle of Ubuntu 15.10 had already started, and daily builds are available for download for some time now. However, the Live ISO images are still powered by the Linux kernel 3.19 packages of Ubuntu 15.04 (Vivid Vervet).

Therefore, today's unanimous decision was to move to Linux kernel 4.0 for the upcoming daily builds of Ubuntu 15.10. The Wily Werewolf kernel has already been rebased on the upstream Linux kernel 4.0.4, which is the latest stable version available on the kernel.org website at the moment of writing this article.

"The master-next branch of our wily kernel has recently been rebased to the 4.0.4 stable kernel. We're in the processing of parsing results of initial DKMS testing against wily. We'll upload to the archive once we have this sorted," says Joseph Salisbury on behalf of the Ubuntu Kernel Team.

In the coming days, Ubuntu 15.10 (Wily Werewolf) will receive the Linux kernel 4.0 upgrade, but the final version of the operating system might be based on Linux kernel 4.1. The new kernel packages will also be available in Wily's main software repositories.
