We announced last year that Epic Games planned to release a new iteration of its acclaimed Unreal Tournament first-person shooter (FPS) video game built with Unreal Engine 4 for GNU/Linux, Microsoft Windows, and Mac OS X computer operating systems.

Today, we are happy to report that a new Pre-Alpha build is available for download and testing, supporting all Linux kernel-based operating systems. The build is dated March 4, 2015, as download links are posted by the Epic Games development team on their forum.

To get the new Unreal Tournament build, which is distributed as both client and server components, in separate ZIP archives, you will have to register for a free account on the Official Unreal Tournament forums, then download the Pre-Alpha files from here.

To start the game, you must extract the archive on a location of your choice, open the LinuxNoEditor directory, then enter the Engine -> Binaries > Linux folder and run the “./UE4 UnrealTournament” command, without quotes, in a terminal window.

While Epic Games doesn’t encourage users to play the game at this time, it urges them to offer constructive feedback on the upcoming version of Unreal Tournament. As such, we warn you that the game is in its very Alpha stages of development, which means that it is full of unresolved bugs, incomplete levels, and placeholder art.
