Details about Mono vulnerabilities which has been found and fixed in Ubuntu 14.10, Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, and Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, were published by Canonical in a security notification.

Mono is a platform used to run and develop applications and a number of vulnerabilities in the package have been identified. Even if these problems are not exactly urgent, it would be a good idea to upgrade the system as soon as possible.

"It was discovered that Mono incorrectly handled memory in certain circumstances. A remote attacker could use this issue to cause Mono to crash, resulting in a denial of service, or obtaining sensitive information. This issue only applied to Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. Also, the fallback to SSLv2 is no longer permitted," reads the security notification.

This is just one of the problems that have identified and corrected with this particular update. For a more detailed description of the problems, you can see Canonical's security notification. Users have been advised to upgrade their systems as soon as possible.

The problems can be repaired if you upgrade your system to the latest libmono-2.0-1 and mono-runtime packages specific to each distribution. To apply the patch, users will have to run the Update Manager application. Even if a reboot is not required, it's still necessary to restart all the apps using Mono.
