The powerful and minimal MPV open-source and multi-platform video player software has been updated today to version 0.8.1. This is the first maintenance release of MPV 0.8, which introduces a huge amount of new features and improvements when compared to previous versions of the applications.

According to the release notes, MPV 0.8.1 now tries to load subtitles in the .vtt file format. Users should also see some major performance improvements for “smooth motion” function. In addition, this version correctly updates the client-api-changes file in the documentation directory, and introduces several other useful documentation updates.

The annoying "[ytdl_hook] WARNING: video doesn't have subtitles" message has been removed. MPV 0.8.1 fixes OpenGL shader compilation with Intel drivers on the Microsoft Windows operating system, improves the compatibility between the OpenGL shader and GLES2, and adds more documentation fixes.

Last but not least, the internal Waf-based build system has now been repaired, allowing for the use of newer versions of Waf with Python 3. Some noise that appeared when seeking through a video while using the WASAPI:exclusive option on Microsoft Windows OSes has also been fixed. Download MPV 0.8.1 right now from Softpedia. It's also available for Arch Linux systems!
