Gratuitous Space Battles 2, a strategy game that lets users build their own fleets and engage in massive space battles, has been released and is now available on Steam for Linux.

Gratuitous Space Battles is not your regular RTS game, and it's probably the only one of its type. It's much more like a tower defense game, and its makers have had a lot of time to perfect the recipe, although the community is not exactly thrilled on how the second title has turned out. The good news is that the devs from Positech Games have decided to make Linux a launcher platform.

"This is NOT a standard RTS game, but a management/simulation game about building space fleets and giving them orders. You aren't the dumb schmuck who actually flies into battle and gets lazered. Leave that to those patriotic and keen young dudes from the outer-colonies. Nope, your job is as supreme commander in chief," reads the Steam synopsis.

The system requirements for the game are not all that high. Users will need an OS that has at least glibc 2.15+, a 2GHz Quad-Core processor, 4 GB of RAM, OpenGL 3.2+, GeForce 600 series or better video cards, and 2 GB of available space.
