Gates of Horizon, a new massively multiplayer online game developed and published by Hex Keep, has been released on Steam for Linux.

There are several MMO titles on Steam for Linux already and they are pretty varied, for the most part. Surprisingly enough, there is no game quite like Gates of Horizon, which does away with fancy graphics and focuses more on the gameplay experience. This title has been described as a space conquest online game, but it does feature some interesting RPG elements.

"During your space journey you will gain power over the universe leading fleets around the systems, improving and managing crew and assets, taking control of entire sectors with your corporation and fighting the dreaded alien menace that still threatens the human race," reads the Steam entry.

Despite the fact that it's labeled as an MMO, this is not a game with a subscription. You just pay and enter the online world. There are no micro-transactions and there are no hidden costs. The system requirements are also quite low and most users should be able to meet them.

Players will need to have at least Ubuntu 10.10, a 2.4 GHz dual-core processor, 2 GB of RAM, at least an NVIDIA GeForce 6600 GT video card, 360 MB of HDD space, and a constant Internet connection.

Enjoy!
