The Blender Foundation, the developer of Blender, an integrated 3D creation software suite, has announced that their application is now available on Steam for Linux.

Steam for Linux is a home for applications as well, not just for games. The Windows platform already has a fair number of applications and Linux is now just catching up. Blender is not the first app to get a Steam version, and it's certainly not the last.

"Blender is a free and open source 3D creation suite. It supports the entirety of the 3D pipeline—modeling, rigging, animation, simulation, rendering, compositing and motion tracking, even video editing and game creation. Blender is cross-platform and runs equally well on Linux, Windows and Macintosh computers. Its interface uses OpenGL to provide a consistent experience," reads the Steam description.

Blender is a powerful tool, and best of all; it's open source and free. It has a lot of uses and its makers release updates and significant improvements to it all the time. The system requirements are a little bit hefty, but that's to be expected. For best performance, users will need an Intel Core I7 processor, 8 GB of RAM, and 1GB of available HDD space.

The developers from The Blender Foundation have already said that they are planning to release the application on the Steam for Mac OS X.
