On April 26, the Debian Release Team, through Niels Thykier, announced that the next major release of the acclaimed Debian GNU/Linux computer operating system will be named Stretch.

Yes, we are talking about Debian 9.0, whose codename is Stretch, another character from the well-known Toy Story animated movie. If you didn't know, it is a tradition to name major Debian GNU/Linux releases after Toy Story characters.

"Pixar is making Toy Story episodes faster than Debian releases consume them. There are at least 64 toy names left!" says the Debian Project in a tweet, which means that they are not running out of codenames very soon.

While everyone enjoys the recently released Debian GNU/Linux 8.0 (Jessie) distribution, which comes with a significant amount of new features mentioned in our initial reports, the Debian Project will now prepare to work on Debian 9.0.

However, there's a very long way until the final release of Debian GNU/Linux 9.0 will see the light of day, so we should concentrate our efforts on the Debian 8.0 (Jessie) operating system, which you can download right now from Softpedia or via the debian.org website.
