The new Cinnamon 2.6.x branch is in the works and the developers have already released a few updates for it, but it's still not available for Linux Mint users. That will change very soon, according to the Linux Mint project leader.

The first version in the Cinnamon 2.6.x branch was unveiled last week, and just today we saw the release of version 2.6.4. The developers have made quite a few changes to the packages, but it's still not available as a stable version for Linux Mint. The devs are taking the extra time to make sure that all the problems have been fixed and that it's ready to be adopted on a larger scale.

"In the next couple of days Cinnamon 2.6 will be released officially and it will then reach the Betsy and Rafaela repositories. Its list of new features will also be announced. I know some people were excited by the new look and feel of the settings when testing it, but there’s much more than initially catches the eye, so we’ll detail all of that," wrote Clement Clement Lefebvre, the leader of the Linux Mint project.

It's still possible to try the new Cinnamon if you enable the Romeo repositories in Linux Mint. You can download Linux Mint 17.1 from Softpedia and give it a try, and let us know how you like the latest Cinnamon release.
