On the last day of July, Canonical's Łukasz Zemczak sent in his daily report about the work done by the Ubuntu Touch developers for the mobile operating system used in the popular Ubuntu phone devices.

According to Mr. Zemczak, the Ubuntu Touch team committed the major GCC 5 transition to the proposed channel for the Ubuntu 15.10 (Wily Werewolf) development branch, which means that the landing gates are now open to app developers and package maintainers.

However, developers are being informed that, because GCC 5 is now the default compiler, they will have to rebuild their packages before pushing them to the Wily branch, as well as to verify if the changes committed meet the GCC 5 compatibility requirements.

In related news, the Ubuntu Touch developers are considering the possibility to release hotfixes to the stable Ubuntu Touch branch before releasing the major OTA-6 software update, which should see the light of day at the end of this month. We will have more information about this in the coming days.

"We are still evaluating the possibility of having a low-cost hotfix release made before OTA-6 from a few critical fixes that are already available. We should have a decision regarding that next week," says Łukasz Zemczak. "The overlay translations are also still in progress, expected to be done somewhere next week."
