The next version of Unity is slowly taking shape

A large part of the work that's been done for Unity 8 is focused on making it looks and feel like Unity 7. Canonical is not trying to reinvent Unity; it's rewriting it for the future.

One of the biggest fears expressed by the community is that Unity 8 will look and feel like a mobile experience on the desktop, but that's not the case. It might seem so right now, but they haven't got to one of the most important parts, feature parity. Everything that you are seeing and using right now in Unity 7 will eventually be made available in Unity 8, but that takes a long time.

Right now, Unity 8 on the desktop works pretty much as its mobile counterpart does, but users’ fears are unfounded. Developers are already working on feature parity, and things will slowly start to fall into place. Sure enough, Unity 8 will have a distinct design, but it won't be very different from the current implementation. Canonical doesn't want to drive people away with a new design after it took so long for users to get used to it.

Developers Cole Raby posted a very interesting video about Unity parity, and it shows just how thing are done at this level. Enjoy!
