CrossCode is an RPG that places you in a variant of the future, one which you must explore to its entire depth through the story of Lea. The game comes with multiple modes and challenges you on different levels without cutting back on the fun.

From the first look, CrossCode looks great if you’re into today’s takes on recreating that classic old-school vibe for an RPG. At a second look, things only get better as you reach new places and explore the three game modes.

One thing that stands out, and is a bit of a misc thing to stop at, is the great choice for the colors. Color generally doesn’t get all that much appreciation but it should, especially in CrossCode. Set in a distant future, colors really help the game transpose you into the otherwise great world design and atmosphere. It comes with a nice blend of retro and futuristic designs that make the entire experience quite immersive.

Stopping a bit at gameplay, it’s important to mention that controls and mechanics are thought out to offer a fast-paced and action-packed game. You get ranged and melee attacks, combos to perform, special abilities to unleash on your enemies and much more to discover as you progress further into the game.

For a pixel graphics RPG, CrossCode packs in quite a lot of stuff in it. Three game modes, a complex story with depth and meaning, boss fights, NPCs that teach you how to master the elements or sell you items to equip and much more. The RPG components are there and they are well represented.

CrossCode’s fast-paced nature makes it a really attractive game. Although action is fairly linear, the game quickly takes you through each of its segments and after all the chaotic and entertaining fights, you barely feel any kind of dullness.

At the time, CrossCode is still in development with things to balance out, rethink, add or remove. Even so, it’s totally worth your time. Gameplay is smooth, animations are excellent and the soundtrack really puts you in the mood to play and keep on playing.
