Mojang confirms that the upcoming update 1.9 for Minecraft's PC version (the Java-based one) is going to include capes and the possibility of flight in the adventure mode. Two animated GIFs showcase the new mechanic and item in action, while a few technical details confirm certain aspects of the whole thing.

Minecraft is one of the most popular video games out there, branching out from its initial PC roots to all sorts of other platforms. While developer Mojang, now owned by Microsoft, is busy working on projects like the Minecraft: Windows 10 edition beta, its team is also trying out new ideas for the PC Java-based edition of the game.

Case in point is the upcoming update 1.9 for Minecraft, which is set to bring a few very impressive additions to the game.

One of them consists of a flight system, powered by a cape, for the game's adventure mode. Mojang's Jens Bergensten shows off the new mechanic on his Twitter account via two animated GIFs, available below, and an image depicting a Mojang-themed cape design, available above.

The actual item can't be crafted and has to be found in the world. It automatically folds when you're on solid ground, but not much else is known about it.

The item is still a work in progress, and update 1.9 for Minecraft has no estimated time of arrival just yet.
