Video game developer Double Fine Productions is announcing that it is working on a new title called Headlander, which is set to be published by Adult Swim and will deliver a new take on side-scrolling, with some action adventure elements and a retro-futuristic look.

Gamers will become a separated head of the last known human in the universe, who is caught in a science fiction world inspired by the '70s that's overseen by a computer with a personality issue.

Double Fine says players will have to explore the environment and find out the secrets that it hides, the most important being what happened to the rest of humanity and whether there is a way to bring them all back.

Robotic bodies that exist in Headlander can be controlled by the human head character thanks to the helmet that he has inside.

Double Fine us not focusing on straight-up combat for the title and wants to create an experience where a sense of exploration and discovery is the core element.

The studio will also deliver its trademark puzzles and a narrative in which humor plays a big part.

Double Fine states, "As you launch from one body to the next, you'll start to discover that things are not quite what they appear to be, and the fate of humanity has yet to be decided..."

Headlander does not yet have an official launch window.
