Valve confirms that it's going to employ a brand-new Dota 2 competition strategy starting with the upcoming The International 5 tournament, as four major championships are going to take place each year, funded by Valve and organized by its eSports partners.

Valve's two biggest titles nowadays, Dota 2 and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, benefit from huge fan followings that not only play the games but also enjoy the various eSports competitions built around them.

While Dota 2 usually has one big tournament every year, in the form of The International, CSGO has several ones made in partnership with Valve.

Now, the studio confirms on the official website that it's going to blend the two strategies together for Dota 2, in the form of the new Dota Major Championships initiative.

More specifically, every season (spring, summer, fall, winter) will have its own major championship. Summer is reserved for The International, but in the other three seasons Valve is going to partner with eSports partners to organize the special events.

However, teams that want to participate will have to refrain from making big roster changes, as Valve frowns on unstable teams.

Expect to hear more about the Dota 2 eSports championships in the future, as Valve is still planning out The International 5 for August.
