The team at Sony Online Entertainment is announcing that it will be launching a system-wide maintenance period at 8 AM Pacific Standard Time today, January 12, and that it expects all its core services to be affected for a two-hour-long period.

The official announcement says that gamers will be not be able to log into their favorite MMOs and that the web services and the forums will also be inaccessible during the period.

The company is thanking all users for their patience and says that, if it needs to extend the period, it will post another official announcement.

Sony Online Entertainment is not saying exactly what elements of its infrastructure are being updated during the two-hour maintenance.

The company handles all the MMOs that Sony is working on, including the very popular Planetside 2.

Almost all online titles have regular downtimes in order to improve the server infrastructure and deliver needed updates.

But a company-wide maintenance might be a sign that the entity is getting ready to make a big announcement about one of its titles in the near future.

The biggest projects SOE is working on at the moment are EverQuest Next and its Landmark companion experience.
