GungHo Online Entertainment and Nintendo have released a new video showcasing gameplay from Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition.

The game looks and plays very similarly to Puzzle & Dragons Z, as rumored, with the plot revolving around Bowser kidnapping princess Peach once again, as expected. Maybe Peach actually wants to get kidnapped and Mario just can’t take a hint.

In any case, Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition will offer gamers several playable characters, with a series of transformations, including Statue Mario, Fire Mario, Ghost Mario, Yoshi in yellow, red and green variants, and Tail Luigi.

The game was announced out of the blue, in January, tapping into the Puzzle & Dragons phenomenon by allowing casual players hardcore enough to use dedicated gaming hardware to take on the role of a certain jolly Italian plumber and pilot him through a mix of match-three puzzle gameplay and role-playing game mechanics.

The original puzzle game is extremely popular on Android and iOS mobile platforms, and now it seems that Nintendo wants a piece of that action.

Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition is headed exclusively to the Nintendo 3DS handheld gaming device, expected in Japan in April 29, and in North America sometime in May.
