You can earn some coins by defeating the Mythical Pokemon

Pokemon Shuffle, Nintendo's freemium puzzle game for the 3DS handheld gaming device, has just reached 3.5 million downloads, since its release two months ago.

The news comes from Serebii, which also reveals that Nintendo is hosting a Celebi challenge, enabling players to get the critter in-game. The challenge will run until May 18, so there's plenty of time to get the Mythical Pokemon.

Those brave and skillful enough to defeat Celebi will also receive 1000 coins, the first time they achieve victory against him.

The video game reached 2.5 million downloads only a month after release, and it's apparently still going pretty strong. The new milestone marks a pretty big success for Nintendo and its match-three spin-off title, in spite of the lukewarm reception from critics.

Pokemon Shuffle is a small-scope experimental title from Nintendo, joining Pokemon Rumble World as the Japanese corporation's first free-to-play games.

For the time being, there is no information on how well Pokemon Rumble World is doing. The game was praised for using a better microtransaction model than Pokemon Shuffle, enabling users to earn in-game currency without the all-too-usual waiting times.

Next month, two more titles similar to Pokemon Shuffle will be released on the Nintendo 3DS, in the form of GungHo's Puzzle & Dragons Z and Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition.
