Nintendo's free-to-play 3DS game is apparently quite a hit

Pokemon Shuffle, the free-to-play puzzle game available on the Nintendo 3DS handheld gaming device, has been downloaded over 2.5 million times since launch.

The title reached the impressive milestone in a stunningly short time, since it was released just over a month ago, on February 18. Pokemon Shuffle reached one million downloads within two weeks of launch, which means that the flow of players has been pretty steady so far, pointing to a similar evolution in the future.

To celebrate the new achievement, Nintendo will reward players with a brand new free in-game item, a Disruption Delay.

When Pokemon Shuffle reached one million downloads, the Big N rewarded fans with a free Complexity -1 item.

Pokemon Shuffle offers an experience similar to the popular Puzzle & Dragons iOS and Android game, a match-three title where you have to fight your way through a deadly dungeon.

Players can enjoy a limited amount of matches for free, using a system similar to the energy-based one utilized by other free-to-play experiences available online and on mobiles.

Players can purchase tokens using real-world money and restore energy or buy more time to avoid losing a confrontation, and it's likely that we'll see a lot more of these titles once Nintendo and DeNA's partnership goes into full swing and the companies start releasing iOS and Android titles.
