The 3DS continues to be the best-selling handheld on the market at the moment and Nintendo is ready to deploy a new firmware update for it, labeled 9.4.0-21U, which will be downloaded by all devices as soon as they are powered up again.

The official announcement on the support page does not offer any clear details on what changes are introduced and simply states the rather classic line: “Further improvements to overall system stability and other minor adjustments have been made to enhance the user experience.”

Some users who have modded their device in order to use homebrew software are reporting that the firmware update has made the handheld unusable.

Nintendo has a long history of tracking the way their devices are used in order to implement changes that close down all vulnerabilities, because it believes all initiatives that support homebrew tend to also promote piracy.

The 3DS is having a good month because of the launch of two remade Pokemon titles, but at the moment the focus of the company is on the Wii U.

Nintendo also says that its device is currently affected by the rise of mobile phone-based gaming and it seems to have no plans for a new generation of the DS line.
