Valve confirms that its next games, not to mention the SteamOS operating system will use the Vulkan API, the next-generation OpenGL iteration made by the Khronos consortium of companies, which includes not only Valve but also Nvidia, AMD, and much more.

Valve mentioned a few weeks ago that it's going to hold a special panel at the GDC 2015 event this week concerning glNext, the new iteration of the OpenGL API that powers quite a few games and technologies on computers.

Today, the group of companies behind the initiative, Khronos, confirmed that the new API is called Vulkan and that Valve will hold a panel on Thursday, March 5, at GDC 2015 titled Vulkan: The Future of High Performance Graphics.

In the official announcement, Valve boss Gabe Newell confirms that Vulkan plays a big role not just in the SteamOS operating system but also in future games made by his company.

"Valve and the other Khronos members are working hard to ensure that this high-performance graphics interface is made available as widely as possible and we view it as a critical component of SteamOS and future Valve games," he mentions on the Khronos website.

Unfortunately for all those who await Half-Life 3, Portal 3, Left 4 Dead 3, or the Source 2 engine, Newell didn't say about when such projects might be revealed.
