Koei Tecmo announces that Dynasty Warriors 8: Empire will also receive a free-to-play variant, titled Dynasty Warriors 8: Empires Free Alliances Version, pretty soon.

This follows Koei's Dead or Alive 5: Last Round Core Fighters initiative and seems to be indicative of a new trend for the publisher, experimenting with stripped-down free-to-play versions of full retail games.

Dynasty Warriors 8: Empires Free Alliances Version will debut in March on the PlayStation Network, and players will be able to use the Edit and Free modes and they will even be able to take the game for a spin in online multiplayer, if they have a PlayStation Plus subscription.

Empires is the second expansion to Dynasty Warriors 8, following last year's Xtreme Legends, focusing on the strategical battle system, enabling players to modify a force's flags, forces and soldiers, and to employ large-scale stratagems.

The gameplay will basically be the same one from Dynasty Warriors 7: Empires, but in addition to the marriage system, officer characters will also be able to spawn offspring with their spouses.

The hack-and-slash video game is coming out on February 27, headed to the Windows PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, Xbox 360 and Xbox One platforms.

The expansion is also adding a ton of new weapons and techniques to the game, and if you've never seen anyone use magical sabatons to defeat an entire army, you can watch the video below.
