Video game developer Team17 is announcing that the next installment in its Worms series is called WMD and it will be coming to both the Xbox One and the PC at some point in 2016, introducing new mechanics and ideas to the classic franchise.

The new title will offer a new set of hand-drawn landscapes, as well as new worm characters for gamers to use.

The gameplay will benefit from the addition of vehicles and the combatants can now also enter buildings, which introduces a new layer of tactics to the experience.

More information about the title will be offered in the coming months, including details on weapons and other features.

Worms WMD will be first shown to those who take part in the Gamescom event in Cologne, Germany, during the coming week.

Mickey Torode, the marketing director, states, "2015 is a special year for us as it marks both Worms 20th birthday and Team17’s 25th anniversary. Moving into 2016, dubbed 'The year of the Worm', will mark the start of the celebrations of 21 Years of Worms."

A new Worms 4 is also coming to mobile devices during the month of August, with a lot of levels for those who want to enjoy the classic gameplay of the series on the move.
