Ultra-wide monitors are still quite few in number compared to 5:4 and especially 16:9 displays, but makers of displays are steadily changing that. Philips has just made its latest contribution to this cause.

The company has formally launched the BDM3470UP 34-inch display whose specs make it well suited to business and office work.

The 21:9 aspect ratio is the first clue, as it allows for two different applications to be easily opened and used side by side. Like a web browser and a doc viewer, or a worksheet and a video call.

The response time is another clue. The GTG one may be 5 ms, but the typical one is 14 ms, which is good enough for work tasks but not so much for games.

On the other hand, the brightness is pretty good, at 320 cd/m2, and the contrast ratio is as good as you could expect (1,000:1, 40,000,000:1  Dynamic SmartContrast). Even the viewing angles are of 178 degrees both horizontally and vertically (AH-IPS display panel).

Still, the newcomer will do better as a work and media display than a gaming model.

Available only in Denmark for now, the Philips BDM3470UP 34-inch display has a price of around $1,200 / €1,059.
