Word has it that Apple is getting ready to launch a new 4-inch iPhone and while many people think such a project makes absolutely no sense because you can barely see anything on such a screen, 20 percent of Americans tend to disagree.

A recent study performed by Piper Jaffray and involving 1,077 US consumers revealed that, right now, 31.2 percent of the Americans find the 4.7-inch screen size of the iPhone 6 and 6s optimal, while only 27.2 percent of the respondents pointed at the 5.5-inch that's currently used on the iPhone 6 Plus and 6s Plus.

But what's more interesting is that 20.3 percent of those participating in the study said they'd buy a 4-inch device, which is living proof that Apple knows what it's doing and a smaller iPhone could actually be a hit.

Metal case and Touch ID

According to pundits, Apple's upcoming 4-inch iPhone would come with a lower price and a metal casing while some say that features such as Touch ID and Apple Pay will continue to be offered to boost their adoption in the United States. 3D Touch, however, won't be available in order to keep the price low.

The new iPhone could arrive in early 2016, but this information is not yet confirmed so far, and the new device could very well launch in the summer, when the new iPhone lineup is also expected to land.

People close to the matter said that Apple is looking to launch the iPhone 7 sooner than usual, so the device could see daylight in June or July before it hits the shelves in late August or September.

As you can see, there are a lot of uncertain things here right now, so take everything with a pinch of salt until Apple takes the wraps off the device. But with so many sources pointing to a smaller iPhone, the chances are that this is real and it's just around the corner.
