Then again, with a price of $429.99 / €338, it has to be

There are certain products that will be expensive no matter how good you are at designing stuff and cutting corners. In those situations, the best idea is to just make sure every facet of the product is on the same, high level.

Curved displays are an example of this. While the ones based on OLED technology are the most egregious, with prices of up to over a hundred grand, LCDs need solid cash too.

In fact, there was a time when even flat-panel LCDs reached a hundred thousand dollars/euro or more. Back when 4K tech and 3D started to show up in products together.

The new LED-backlit monitor that Samsung released isn't big enough to warrant that kind of payment, and it doesn't use OLED tech either. It still reaches $429.99 though, or €338 according to exchange rates (not that they'll matter much).

Samsung SD590C

This product is not a television set, much as you may have grown to expect only them to offer a curved display technology. Instead, it is a monitor with a fairly modest diagonal, all things considered: 27 inches.

The resolution isn't that shocking either, at 1920 x 1080 pixels. Full HD is pretty much expected now. Even the viewing angles of 178/178 degrees aren't that awe-inspiring anymore.

The brightness of 350 cd/m2, on the other hand, deserves a bit of attention. With 200-250 being average, it puts the new Samsung SD590C quite squarely in between the gaming and multimedia fields.

The response time is another interesting tidbit. At 4 ms, it's not the best we've ever seen, but it's definitely not the worst either. Gamers should find it quite satisfactory. Same for the 3000:1 Mega Dynamic Contrast Ratio.

The only issue that customers could possibly find with the newcomer is the rather low refresh rate of 60 Hz, so no 3D for you.

Design and availability

The Samsung SD590C is colored black  but has a metallic silver stand. Also, it can tilt and has integrated stereo speakers, plus a headphone jack. There is one of each these connectors on the back: DVI, HDMI, DisplayPort.

Samsung says in its press release that the product is supposed to be “ideal for serious gamers or office workers who spend extended hours in front of a computer.” We'll let you decide that for yourselves though.

On that note, sales will begin on October 1, 2014, the day after tomorrow as it were, for the price we mentioned before.
