A new world record was established in Japan this past weekend, when hundreds of people managed to all sit on the same chair at the same time without breaking it or losing their balance and falling face first to the ground.

Mind you, this new world record is as official as it gets. Keepers of the Guinness Book were there to count the number of people sitting on the chair and can confirm that the stunt was the most impressive of this kind so far documented anywhere in the world.

How do you sit hundreds of people on the same chair?

Before anyone asks, this new world record wasn't established by using a seriously oversized chair or anything of the sorts. That would have counted as cheating, something Guinness Book officials are known to frown upon.

Instead, the 1,831 guys and gals that gathered in Yamagata city in central Japan's Gifu prefecture formed an orderly line and each sat on the person behind them, as illustrated in the photo below.

“One man at the end of the row sat on a chair, with the following people sitting on the lap of the person behind them,” a city official explained in an interview.

This could also be considered cheating, seeing how, except for the person at the end of the line, nobody was actually sitting in the traditional sense. Still, Guinness officials agreed to turn a blind eye to this technicality.

To have their stunt included in the Guinness Book of World Records, the sitting aficionados had to keep their ground for over one minute after having each assumed their position. It took them a couple of attempts to succeed.

The previous record was set in China just years back

According to Mirror, the previous record for how many people can sit on a chair without breaking it or falling to the ground themselves was established in the city of Matau in China just a few years back.

Thus, it was in 2013 that as many as 1,666 people in China somehow managed to all sit on the same chair and made it in the Guinness Book of World Records as a result.
