Many Xiaomi fans are still disappointed with the fact that the latest MIUI 7.1 update is still based on Android KitKat operating system.

The good news is the Chinese company plans to release Android 6.0 Marshmallow upgrade for most of its smartphones.

Earlier this week, Xiaomi offered Android 6.0 Marshmallow for several handsets, but the new ROM is available to beta testers only.

According to Xiaomi, “MIUI 7 China developer ROM based on Android 6.0 Marshmallow for Mi 3 W/C, Mi 4 3G/4G and Mi Note has been released to beta testers and will be released for public in the near future after it's stable enough with the help of beta testers.”

Along with the announcement of Marshmallow for beta testers, Xiaomi has also published the highlights of the update. Based on this list of changes, the update doesn't seem to come with any new major features.

Some bug fixes and small improvements

For example, deep clean now supports managing videos and cleaning APK. files. The update should also fix a Home screen-related issue when using Snow fairy theme, as icons would disappear for a moment after unlocking.

Another bug fix for the Cleaner has been included in the update too, so Xiaomi smartphone users should rest assured that the errors in calculating sizes of deep clean big files have been addressed.

Other visual and under-the-hood changes might have been implemented as well, but the official changelog doesn't mention anything else.

Keep in mind that the update is only available for beta testers that own one of the eligible smartphones mentioned earlier.

It's also worth pointing out that while upgrading to MIUI 7 will not wipe your data on the smartphone, it's recommended to make a data backup before updating.

Let's hope Xiaomi will release Android 6.0 Marshmallow update for as many smartphones as possible sooner rather than later.
