The biggest update for Xbox One is coming soon

One of the things that Microsoft promised with Xbox One was backwards compatibility for Xbox 360 games and this has been in the works since the launch of the console. Now, this feature is finally getting released in November, for all Xbox One users.

The ability to play games from the previous generation of consoles is an important one, even if most of them are no longer on par with today's titles. People still have an extensive collection of games that just sit on the shelf.

Who's going to dust off that Xbox 360 to play something from three years ago? On the other hand, people might want to play some older games that they liked on their new and shiny Xbox One console.

Console builders are finally figuring out that backwards compatibility is a compelling selling point for them and they are now working to make it happen.

Microsoft announced it right from the start, although it's going to be available for just a limited number of games, and Sony is only now looking at the possibility of providing support for old PlayStation 2 games (PS3 games are not even being discussed).

Backwards compatibility is only a small part

This particular function is just a working part from the New Xbox One Experience update that will land on the consoles. This new update will do more than just provide backwards compatibility for many games. It also brings a new UI that integrates the speed and versatility of Windows 10. Or at least this is what Microsoft is telling us.

Users must be mentally prepared to say goodbye to the old interface and meet the new one that is a lot more like what you would find in a Windows 10 OS although it should be optimized for console use. And yes, Cortana is also making its debut.

Microsoft promises that Xbox One will become a much more social experience, that it will be much faster, new communication features will complement the existing ones, users will see what's trending in the community and, of course, benefit from a brand-new and shiny interface.

As you can imagine, this is a significant step for Xbox One and a lot of people are bound to be unhappy with the visual and functional changes made to the console, but it's happening, and it will be here on November 12. Also, don't think for a moment that it's going to be optional.
