The team at Microsoft working on the Xbox One home console is announcing that the recently revealed over-the-air TV functionality for the device will not be available to those who do not have an external hard drive attached.

The company is at the moment also working with Seagate in order to launch a new storage option which will offer 2 TB worth of extra space and will be compatible with both the new device and the older Xbox 360.

Richard Irving, who is working on the re-designed user interface of the Xbox One, tells Gamespot that "You need an external hard-drive specifically for DVR because we want to keep the [storage] paths optimized between playing games and watching TV. We don't want them to interact with each other."

A digital TV tuner is also needed to get over-the-air television service on the Xbox One.

The new big external hard drive for the home console is expected to arrive before the end of the year.

No exact date has yet been mentioned for the over-the-air service, which many users of the Xbox One have been requesting since the platform was launched.

The New Xbox One experience will offer new ways to use the device

The user interface re-design will be based on Windows 10 and should make it easier to use the various new options added to the home console.

Gamers will be able to search the TV guide that the Xbox One has and prepare recordings for the shows that they love, which can then be activated and accessed using the app running on a PC or on a mobile device.

In theory, all over-the-air TV recordings will be 1080p when it comes to quality, but a lot will depend on the signal that's available in their region.

Rumors were also talking about a more open application environment for the Xbox One, designed to resemble what Windows 10 will offer, but so far Microsoft has not made an official announcement about it.

The company is focusing on the coming Christmas shopping and launch period, aiming to make the home console more attractive by delivering Halo 5: Guardians and Forza Motorsport 6 to gamers.
