Wireshark, the best network protocol analyzer that offers users the means to capture and interactively browse the traffic running on a computer network, is now at version 2.0.1.

Wireshark is probably the best application of its kind and is available for Linux users as well. It's been a long-time favorite of the community, and it became a useful tool that is now almost impossible to replace. Any kind of upgrade is usually well received, and the latest one is just a collection of fixes.

Wireshark 2.0 was a major upgrade, and it came with a ton of new features and other improvements. We covered that release in more detail, and you can check it if you want to see what's new. That was more than a month ago, and now it's time for the first maintenance version.

What's new in Wireshark 2.0.1

The application is capable of inspecting hundreds of protocols including IPsec, ISAKMP, Kerberos, SNMPv3, SSL/TLS, WEP, and WPA/WPA2. This is just a small part of what Wireshark can really do.

“Wireshark is the world's foremost network protocol analyzer. It lets you see what's happening on your network at a microscopic level. It is the de facto (and often de jure) standard across many industries and educational institutions. Wireshark development thrives thanks to the contributions of networking experts across the globe. It is the continuation of a project that started in 1998,” reads the official website.

According to the changelog, zooming out (Ctrl+-) too far no longer crashes Wireshark, the IPv6 Mobility Header Link-Layer Address Mobility Option is now parsed correctly, About → Plugins is now scrollable, the first displayed frame not updated when changing profile, and many other fixes have been implemented.

As usual, Linux users will only get the source code for the latest version, which means that you will need to compile it yourself if you don't want to wait until it arrives in the repositories. A complete list of changes, fixes, and new features can be found in the official announcement. You can download Wireshark 2.0.1 right now from Softpedia.
