Net Applications data shows that Windows Phone loses users

It's no secret that Microsoft and its users have really high expectations for Windows Phone and Windows 10 Mobile, but until the latter arrives, the existing platform keeps losing users, and that's not at all a good thing ahead of the big launch projected for later this year.

New data provided by Net Applications for the month of June 2015 shows that, worldwide, Windows Phone's market share is still going down, most likely because everyone's now waiting to see what Windows 10 Mobile will bring new and what devices will launch together with the new platform.

Last month, Windows Phone dropped to 2.29 percent, down from 2.45 percent the month before, but still better than in April, when it had a share of 2.07 percent. According to this research vendor, the biggest market share that Windows Phone had in the last 12 months was in August 2014, when it achieved 2.69 percent.

Android still the king

Windows Phone's market share, however, varies by country, and while the platform is performing rather below expectations in the United Sates, it's doing much better in Europe, where buyers seem to be more interested in devices powered by this particular OS version.

But despite this, Android continues to be the number one mobile platform across the world, with Net Applications claiming that it's powering no less than 51.04 percent of the smartphones. iOS comes second with a share of 40.83 percent, followed by Windows Phone well behind with 2.29 percent.

Needless to say, Windows 10 Mobile has the opportunity to make Microsoft a much more important player in the mobile world, but it remains to be seen if the new OS plus new devices combo could actually help the company compete against Android and iOS.

Windows 10 Mobile is projected to launch in September or October this year, so we only have to wait a few more months to find the answer to this question.
