Android fans who are using WhatsApp Messenger application on a daily basis will be pleased to know that developers have just released a major update that brings some new features and improvements.

First of all, let's mention that some of the features included in this update were implemented in the iOS version of WhatsApp a few weeks ago. Also, Windows Phone users will probably have to wait a lot longer to get these changes on their devices.

The first new feature announced by WhatsApp developers is "starred messages." This means that users will now be able to tap and hold on a received message and star it.

The star icon appears on top of the conversation window, so it's very easy to access. Keep in mind that you can “unstar” a message if that's what you wish.

Another new feature included in the newest version of WhatsApp for Android will allow users to see much richer link previews. So, after applying this update, the links you receive via WhatsApp won't look like regular URLs or small thumbnails.

These new features bring WhatsApp closer to a social app

Instead, the application will be able to generate a small preview of the article and a larger thumbnail. Obviously, if you don't like this feature, you can choose not to show these rich link previews when you share links.

Last but not least, WhatsApp developers have confirmed the update adds Android direct share support, which will allow users to choose a specific chat when sharing content from other applications.

However, this feature is only available to those who own devices powered by Android 6.0 Marshmallow operating system.

You can now download WhatsApp Messenger for Android for free via Google Play Store. The application should be fully compatible with all devices running Android 2.1 and up.
