A new OTA update is in the works for Ubuntu Touch and developers have already implemented a large number of features and various changes.

Ubuntu Touch OTA-9 is scheduled to be released on January 27 if nothing goes wrong. Truth be told, the latest releases for the Ubuntu Touch team have been almost on time, and it looks like they are getting the hang of it. Unlike other launch dates for Ubuntu products, the one for the mobile OS is not set in stone and developers will delay the launch if they have to.

The work list for OTA-9 is a big one, and it’s not exactly user-friendly. It will be published in a more readable form before the actual launch so that regular people can ready it and don’t get a headache.

What’s coming to OTA-9

We’ve been writing about the OTA-9 update for a while now, and we already know some of the features and improvements that are about to land. The list of items that need to be fixed or implemented still has entries marked as confirmed or incomplete, so we know that they still have a lot of work to do.

According to the changelog, thumbnails are now updated in the image viewer after the editing process has concluded, a keyboard shortcut for "undo tab close" has been added for the Browser, the VPN support has been improved, the web browser is now capable of downloading office documents, vcard importing has been improved, HDR now works properly with patterned high contrast images, and push notifications now appear when Unity is locked.

Also, an audible warning about low battery charge is now provided, the download manager has been refined, the UI no longer freezes when playing media from the Dash, the Wi-Fi icon no longer disappears after connecting to a hidden network, a new version of Mir has been implemented, and location settings are no longer enabled by default for scopes.

This is just a short list of improvements coming to Ubuntu Touch OTA-9. If you want to know more and are OK with reading a long list of mostly minor stuff (what is this, a page made for ants?), then you should check the entire changelog.
