Waze has just received one of the biggest updates on iOS in the last 12 months, with version 4.0 bringing not only a fresh design but also plenty of new features that for the moment are exclusive to iPhone (the Android version is expected to debut soon too though).

First and foremost, there’s a new design, which, according to the parent company, should provide easier navigation, reporting, and sharing. But in addition to making everything more straightforward and intuitive, the new Waze app also looks a lot cleaner and more modern, which is clearly a must-have for an app that has grown so much lately.

New features

The app has been optimized to require fewer taps to start a drive, send locations and directions, so with just a single tap on the screen, you get to see your favorite places, recently entered locations, plus support for voice commands, which should really make it faster to find a destination.

The new ETA panel groups the most important details about your route, including reports and alternate directions, as well as options to add a stop on the way or send ETA to added contacts (Facebook support continues to be offered).

Reports and alerts are now color-coded, which makes them easier to notice on the map, so police reports are blue, traffic jams are red, while road hazards are yellow.

And last but not least, there’s integration with your calendar, which allows Waze to issue smart reminders to leave on time for your appointments. The app automatically detects your next appointment, notifies you about it and then calculates the fastest route to make sure you arrive on time.

Waze says the app has been optimized for reduced battery consumption, which is clearly a welcome change for those who use to drive without the phone plugged in to a power source.

Just like all the other app updates on iOS, this new version is available in the store if you’ve already installed it or if you want to start from scratch. The Android version is most likely on its way too, and it shouldn’t take too long before it arrives.
