Nicki Minaj is very upset that neither “Anaconda” nor “Feeling Myself” was nominated for Video of the Year at the MTV Video Music Awards 2015, scheduled to take place on August 30. She’s so upset that she went off on Twitter about how the white media is biased against black entertainers and would not give them the recognition they deserve.
Taylor Swift, whose “Bad Blood” video has the most nominations at the gala, including for the Video of the Year category, took this as a personal attack and urged Nicki to come up on stage with her if she wins, as a sign that she’s above the pettiness of these awards galas.
And smack in the middle, there’s Kim Kardashian.
An “Imma let you finish” joke that could have used better timing
The photo attached to this article was posted with the caption “Imma let you finish but…” just as the Nicki vs. Taylor spat was still happening on Twitter.
The photo of Kim in her panties is from her latest Vogue Spain shoot, the one that promises to show us a side of the reality star (no makeup, no secrets, no censorship) we’ve not seen before. She’s reaching to answer her cell phone, while gesturing as if to silence someone speaking to her, presumably the person with the camera, who, in this case, identifies with the viewer.
The moment she posted it, it was assumed that she was taking a part in the Twitter spat and siding with Nicki, thus obviously shading Taylor.
Kim has deleted the photo since, saying she wasn’t shading anyone: she was just posting photos and a strange coincidence made it so that this happened while Taylor and Nicki were having words.
Kanye West’s infamous “Imma let you finish” moment
To better understand the connection many made, you have to go back to the 2009 edition of the VMAs, when Taylor won Video of the Year and Kanye interrupted her moment by saying “Imma let you finish but… Beyonce had one of the best videos of all time!”
The interruption nearly cost Kanye his career, became a meme and is still haunting him to this day, even though he and Taylor have long made peace over it.
As it happens, Kim is Kanye’s wife as of May last year, so when she used his infamous “tagline” as caption for her photo, people assumed she was saying it to Taylor as well.
But Kim says that shading people on social media like this is not something she would do. So that’s that.
Wait wait I'm in Paris it's the middle of the night & I'm posting my Vogue Spain pics not having a clue what's going on in the music world

I'm not trying to shade anyone! That's not my style! I just thought that caption was perfect for that pic! Changing the caption now! #ironic

Hey guys @MTV thank you for my nominations. 😘😘😘 Did Feeling Myself miss the deadline or...?

If I was a different "kind" of artist, Anaconda would be nominated for best choreo and vid of the year as well. 😊😊😊
— NICKI MINAJ (@NICKIMINAJ) July 21, 2015
U couldn't go on social media w/o seeing ppl doing the cover art, choreo, outfits for Halloween...an impact like that & no VOTY nomination?
— NICKI MINAJ (@NICKIMINAJ) July 21, 2015
When the "other" girls drop a video that breaks records and impacts culture they get that nomination. 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊

Ironically, I'm shooting a VIDEO today😩

If your video celebrates women with very slim bodies, you will be nominated for vid of the year 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
— NICKI MINAJ (@NICKIMINAJ) July 21, 2015
Oh but trust me. I'll be on that stage to collect my awards for vid of the year. Feeling Myself & Anaconda. 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊

I'm not always confident. Just tired. Black women influence pop culture so much but are rarely rewarded for it. https://t.co/2xOvJzBXJX

Huh? U must not be reading my tweets. Didn't say a word about u. I love u just as much. But u should speak on this. @taylorswift13

Nothing I said had to do with Taylor. So what jabs? White media and their tactics. So sad. That's what they want. https://t.co/AfcwoyDvpg
— NICKI MINAJ (@NICKIMINAJ) July 21, 2015
Ryan posted a headline of Taylor saying she loves & supports me. But not me saying the same to her. Lol. Their headline says I took a "jab"?

I'm so glad u guys get to see how this stuff works. Taylor took her music off spotify and was applauded. We launched Tidal & were dragged.
— NICKI MINAJ (@NICKIMINAJ) July 21, 2015
@NICKIMINAJ I've done nothing but love & support you. It's unlike you to pit women against each other. Maybe one of the men took your slot..
— Taylor Swift (@taylorswift13) July 21, 2015
@NICKIMINAJ If I win, please come up with me!! You're invited to any stage I'm ever on.
