VideoLAN had the great pleasure of releasing a new major version of their VLC for iOS media player app for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch devices on the last of June 2015.

The VLC for iOS 2.6.0 release is here to introduce support for the Apple Watch device, allowing users to control the VLC media player from their watches. The new Apple Watch app lets you control the playback of your media files, browse the library, and view detailed information about a certain audio or video file.

But the new VLC for iOS version adds numerous other attractive features, such as a mini-player that allows users to browse the library during playback, support for looping playlists, a brand-new ingest mechanism for audio files, better remote command support, as well as enhanced thumbnail generation.

Moreover, there are improvements to the overall performance of the web interface and thumbnail on devices that run an A5 processor or higher, support for Plex Media Server shares that are password protected, better support for sharing multimedia files across the local network, and improved search results for the media library.

Several issues have been addressed

In addition to the new features and improvements mentioned above, VLC for iOS 2.6.0 addresses many of the annoying issues that have been reported by users since the previous release of the app, such as a crash that occurred when attempting to play audio or video files from a music album or folder on an iPad device.

Furthermore, a crash that occurred when the VLC for iOS app was sent to background during playback of a video file was fixed, a privacy leak related to a password-protected media library has been patched, the "crop to fill screen" issue on iPad devices was resolved, and an issue with downloading of files via UPnP was fixed.

Last but not least, there's also a fix for a crash that occurred when the users attempted to lock the device's screen during playback of multimedia files. An annoying pop-up that reported crashes even if there was no crash has been removed, and the media library's thumbnails are now being updated to the last playback position.

VLC for iOS 2.6.0 is available right now, worldwide on the App Store on iTunes. You can update it on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch device, as well as install the new Apple Watch app on your watch. Please note that the app requires iOS 6.1 or later.
