After announcing a few days ago the availability of the Vivaldi snapshot 1.0.298.15, a release that fixed over 50 bugs in the Chromium-based web browser, Ruarí Ødegaard has the great pleasure of informing us today, October 16, about the immediate availability for download of Vivaldi snapshot 1.0.300.5.

Vivaldi snapshot 1.0.300.5 is now available for download for GNU/Linux, Mac OS X, and Microsoft Windows operating systems (see download links at the end of the article). According to Mr. Ødegaard, Vivaldi snapshot 1.0.300.5 is here to introduce support for HTML5 MP4 video stream, including those compressed with the H.264/MPEG-4AVC & AAC codecs, as well as support for MP3 audio streams.

Thanks to these two new features, the compatibility with most of the multimedia websites has been greatly improved, because Vivaldi now supports an even wider range of audio and video formats than ever before. In addition, the developers managed to plug 15 more of those annoying bugs that have been reported by users since the previous snapshot build.

"I smiled when I saw today's build number 1.0.300.5 and knew it was perfect for a snapshot because I instantly thought of the famous scene in the movie "300", where King Leonidas kicks an enemy into a pit. I found myself visualising our founder Jon, shouting "THIS IS VIVALDI!!!" and kicking bugs into one of one of Iceland's famous volcanoes," said Ruarí Ødegaard.

HTML5 video and audio support in Ubuntu Linux

Vivaldi developers urge users to test the 1.0.300.5 snapshot of the web browser against their favorite multimedia websites and report back if they encounter issues. The support for the new HTML5 video and audio formats has been improved mostly for recent versions of the Microsoft Windows and Apple Mac OS X computer operating systems.

Users of the Ubuntu Linux distribution will have to install the chromium-codecs-FFmpeg-extra package when using Vivaldi build 1.0.300.5. Once the package has been installed, they must restart the web browser and try to browse some multimedia websites. For other GNU/Linux operating systems, you must read these notes posted by the Vivaldi developers.

Download Vivaldi snapshot 1.0.300.5 for GNU/Linux, Mac OS X, and Microsoft Windows operating systems right now from Softpedia, where you will find 32-bit and 64-bit binaries. However, please try to keep in mind that this is a pre-release version and it's not suitable for deployment on production machines where stability is of the essence.
